George Morgan works responsively across sculpture, drawing and collage. He leans into physical processes of accumulating, deconstructing, organising, and reconfiguring material. Recent project work explores how overlooked material moves through an art school environment. Fragments of studio debris – tape, offcuts, and other overlooked material – accumulate over time and are repurposed into new arrangements. Morgan works with what happens to appear to him, rather than seeking material out, maintaining a regular noticing practice.
He is drawn to unexpected combinations of found objects, embracing chance encounters with materials and people. Material is collected slowly and used quickly. Working in a responsive manner creates an avenue away from perfectionism – habits and surprise are key. Projects develop through play, while an awareness of what is kept or discarded remain central.
Underlying his practice are questions about value and ownership. He is interested in material anthropology. Key references include The value of things by Neil Cummings and Marysia Lewandowska, in addition to Stuff by Daniel Miller. Notable artist references include Rose Salane (Panorama 94, for her ways of mapping and auditing), Theaster Gates (for his perspectives on forgotten and overlooked objects), and Richard Wentworth (Making do and getting by, for his habits of noticing and recording).
Resulting works are intimate, finding scale through sequence and repetition. Viewers are invited to encounter the work closely and engage with its familiar yet unfamiliar qualities.
