George Morgan is currently exploring how discarded material moves through art institutions. Fragments of studio debris – tape, offcuts, and other overlooked material – accumulate over time and are repurposed into small sculptural arrangements, drawings and collages. Morgan works with what happens to appear to him, rather than seeking material out, maintaining a regular noticing practice.
He is drawn to irregularities and unusual combinations, adopting an experimental way of working. Material is collected slowly and used quickly. Working in a responsive manner creates an avenue away from perfectionism – habits and surprise are key. Projects develop through play, collecting and re-arranging, while ideas of negative space and what is kept or discarded remain central.
Underlying his practice are questions about value, material and ownership. Resulting works are small and intimate. Viewers are invited to look closely and reconsider the materials and objects that surround them.
